Vernon Lee Sperry, 89, of Lexington, Missouri passed away Friday, July 25, 2024, at Kansas City VA Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 2, 2024, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, 20109 Bus MO-13 Hwy, Higginsville, MO, 64037. Memorials are suggested to The Lexington Restoration Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ or Saint Joseph Indian School. Vernon was born on December 15, 1934, in Greenwood, Missouri to Charles Stillman and Emma Catherine (Waterman) Sperry Sr. He graduated from William Chrisman High School. Serving his country with honor from 1954 to 1957, Vernon was a brave infantryman deployed in Korea. He received numerous ribbons and medals that were awarded to him while in foreign lands to protect his county. He was awarded five purple hearts, along with expert rifleman, medal of honor in 2012, and received a personal letter of thanks for his actions behind enemy lines in the war efforts. After service to his country, following his military service, Vernon continued his devoted service with his career in national security for the F.B.I.
He was a member of The Lexington Restoration Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ and was ordained an Elder in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Vernon’s generous and caring heart inspired him to extend a helping hand to those in need and donated generously to those in need every year. Vernon enjoyed drag racing and was quite active in his preaching among the American Indians.
Vernon is survived by three children, David Sperry, Mike Sperry, Linda Sperry and numerous grandchildren; two sisters, Marie (Ed) Fredrick, and Carol Reese; sister-in-law, Connie Sperry; his friend and pastor, John Eichhorn and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Along with both his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Sperry; a son, Donnie Sperry; a brother, Charles Sperry, Jr.; his special friend, Helen Clark.
