Sylvan A. Struchtemeyer, 88 of Odessa, Missouri passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at home surrounded by family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, 306 S. 2nd St., Odessa, MO, 64076, 816-633-5524. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Wednesday August 2, 2017 at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will be in the Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery in Columbus, MO. Sylvan was born on May 31, 1929 in rural Mayview, MO to Edwin Frederick and Emma Lou (Schmutz) Struchtemeyer. He was inducted into the United States Army on April 13, 1951 and was honorably discharged on March 14, 1953. He served in the Korean War and earned the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal and 2 Overseas Bars. He was a lifetime member of the Odessa V.F.W. Post 5675. On August 19, 1955 he married Mary Ellen (Davis) Struchtemeyer in Odessa, Missouri. She survives of the home. Sylvan worked for 40 plus years as a mechanic and retired from the Odessa School District as a Custodian with 10 years of service. He was a member of the Assembly of God in Odessa. In addition to spending time with his family and friends, Sylvan enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Struchtemeyer of Odessa, MO; two children, Glen Ray Struchtemeyer and wife Myra of Odessa, MO and Lori Anne Struchtemeyer of Odessa, MO; four grandchildren, Reesa Renee Lanum and husband Richard of Grain Valley, MO, Rachel Dawn Landsberg and husband Jeremy of Odessa, MO, Dena O’Hare of Ft. Wayne, Indiana and Jennifer Franklin and husband Jeff of Lee’s Summit, MO; one brother, Henry Lee Struchtemeyer and wife Delores of Mayview, MO.

Sylvan was preceded in death by his parents.
