Russell Lee Westerhold, 90, of Odessa, Missouri passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the Missouri State Veterans Home in Warrensburg, MO.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 25, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, 301 S. 1st St., Odessa, MO, 64076. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday April 24, 2016 at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, 306 S. 2nd St., Odessa, MO, 64076, 816-633-5524. Burial with Military Rites will be at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church of Odessa. Russell was born on June 15, 1925 in Odessa, MO to Otto L. and Leona (Davidson) Westerhold. He served in the United States Army from 1944 until being Honorably Discharged in 1953. Russell was a Veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He earned a Purple Heart in World War II. Russell was a Lifetime Member of the VFW Post 5675 and Lifetime Member of the American Legion Post 131 in Warrensburg, MO. He was a Post Commander of the VFW Post 5675. Russell married Hazel (Higgins) Westerhold on February 11, 1950 in Warrensburg, MO. They served as Assistant State Director of the Good Sam Club. He also served as an Odessa Civil Defense & Reserve Police Officer since 1971. After 30 years, Russell retired from the General Motors Leeds Plant in Kansas City, MO in 1983 and was a member of the UAW Local 93 in Kansas City. Russell was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Odessa and was Confirmed at the Mt. Tabor Methodist Church in 1936. In addition to spending time with his family and friends, Russell enjoyed traveling, fishing, wood working, model trains, and playing Santa Clause during Christmas.
In addition to his wife Hazel, Russell is survived by a daughter, Betty Watson of Higginsville, MO; four grandchildren, Pam Mifflin and husband Dale of Clinton, MO, Denise Glover and husband Todd of Greenwood, MO, Donald Barker Jr, of Grain Valley, MO, and Desira Edwards and husband Scott of Jensen Beach, Florida; seven great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren; two sisters, Bonnie Dutton and Lena Barker, both of Odessa, MO; and many nieces and nephews, close neighbors from the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg.
In addition to his parents, Russell was preceded in death by a daughter, Glenna (Westerhold) Harkness, a great great granddaughter, Serenity Ventimiglia, two brothers, Lloyd and Henry Westerhold, a sister, Effie McFerrin; and a son-in-law, Pete Watson.
