Louis was born on January 13, 1927, in Lexington where he resided for more than 90 years. He and Emily (Bertz) celebrated 70 years of marriage in 2021 and had two children, Bill and Hollye. Louis was the son of Louis W. Coen, Sr., and Stella May (Skinner) Coen. Following high school graduation in 1945, Louis served in the U.S. Marine Corps and upon his honorable discharge, worked as a mechanic at several businesses. Then, he and Emily owned and operated Coen's Flower Shop in Lexington for over 20 years, succeeding his father who owned the business 17 years. After selling the flower shop, Louis started a painting business, while continuing the family vegetable plant and produce business another 30 years. Louis's home-grown tomatoes and corn on the cob were a welcome highlight each summer. Several years after retiring, Louis and his brother Don opened The Wood Shop in Lexington, which primarily was a thriving furniture repair and refinishing shop but became well-known by stray cats for its free meals and by good friends for libations and humorous stories of the day.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister and brother-in-law Bonnie and Bill Wilson of Fort Worth, Texas. He is survived by his wife Emily of the home; brother and sister-in-law Don and Ann Coen, Lexington; brother and sister-in-law Dr. Larry and Diane Coen, Naples, FL; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Steve and Sharon Lewis, Anita, IA; his son and daughter-in-law Bill and Joetta Coen, Queen Creek, AZ; and daughter and son-in-law Hollye and Dennis Denney, Lee's Summit. In addition, he had 4 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Louis loved to bring humor and smiles to family and friends and will be forever missed by all.

The family extends special thanks to staff members of Oak Ridge Assisted Living in Richmond who provided Louis with excellent care, comfort, and friendship in his last years; the compassionate care of Shirkey Hospice & Palliative Care staff members; and Reverend Liz Deveney for her comforting words, fellowship, and powerful prayers.
