John Leroy Tye

John Leroy Tye, 95, of Odessa, Missouri passed away on Friday, August 8, 2014 at the Meyer Care Center in Higginsville, MO.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at the Long Branch Baptist Church, 1495 Chrisman Rd., in rural Odessa with Chaplain Ray Haught and Reverend Sandy Feeler officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, August 11, 2014 at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, 306 South Second St., Odessa, MO, 64076, 816-633-5524. Inurnment will be in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Long Branch Baptist Church, Crossroads Hospice or Mt. Tabor Cemetery. Leroy was born on August 31, 1918 in Odessa, MO to Pallas Love and Hattie (Lona) (Cantwell) Tye. On December 24, 1938 he was united in marriage to Hazel (Smith) Tye in Wellington, MO. She preceded him in death on June 25, 2011. Leroy was a member of the Long Branch Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon. Leroy was a member of the “Bee Squares” and “Angel Wings” Square Dance Clubs and also the Odessa Rodeo and Saddle Club. He was a lifelong resident of Lafayette and Johnson County. Leroy farmed most of his life and retired from the GM Leeds Plant on January 1, 1981 after 28.8 years of service.

Survivors include four children, Donald R. Tye and wife JoAnn of Odessa, MO, Joyce A. Schemmer and husband Marvin of Odessa, MO, Virginia D. Bertz and husband Ronnie of Higginsville, MO and Joel D. Tye of Odessa, MO; 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren; two sisters, Sue Miller and husband Clyde and Emma Hobbs of Odessa, MO; Two sister-in-laws Mabel Smith of Odessa and Vera Smith of Warrensburg, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife Hazel of 72 years, Leroy was preceded in death by a son John W. Tye, three brothers, Doyle (Jack), Joe and James Tye and a sister, Louie Jane Laun.
