John David Hellums

John David Hellums, 79, of Odessa, Missouri passed away on Friday, June 17, 2016 at the Kindred Hospital Northland in Kansas City, MO.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, 306 S. 2nd St., Odessa, MO, 64076, 816-633-5524 with Father Matthew Brumleve officiating. Visitation will be held two hours prior from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Odessa Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the VFW Post 5675 Memorial Auxiliary or Great Circle-Tom Butterfield Campus. John was born on January 13, 1937 in Malta Bend, MO to Frank Edward & Mamie Elizabeth (Grisham) Hellums. He graduated in 1955 from Odessa High School. After high school John enlisted in the United States Army on January 11, 1957 and was Honorably Discharged on January 9, 1959. He married Mary Tonia (Rupp) Hellums on March 27, 1957 in Higginsville, MO. John retired from General Motors on July 1, 1989 after 30 years. After retiring he co-owned Double D's Tavern in Odessa. John served 3 terms as Ward 3 Alderman on the Odessa City Council. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Odessa. In addition to spending time with family and friends, John enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and motorcycles.

In addition to his wife Toni, John is survived by two daughters, Marnie Jo Knapp and husband Mitchell of Mayview, MO and Corrie Dyan Willoughby and husband Nelson of Excelsior Springs, MO; three grandchildren, Hayden Knapp, Isaac Willoughby and Dyanna Willoughby; one brother, Bill Hellums and wife Mary of Odessa, MO; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Frank Jr., Paul and Ralph Hellums; and two sisters, Bernice Anglen and Dorothy Knutson.
