JoAnn (Martin) McCarty

JoAnn (Martin) McCarty, 87 of Bates City, Missouri passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at home surrounded by family.

Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 9, 2024, at St. George Catholic Church, 716 S. 3rd St., Odessa, MO, 64076. A visitation will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the church, with Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00 a.m. A Rite of Committal will be in the Lone Jack Cemetery in Lone Jack, MO. JoAnn was born on February 2, 1937, in Higginsville, MO to William Sheldon and Anna Frances (Mayta) Martin. She graduated from Northeast High School in Kansas City, MO. On January 25, 1974, JoAnn was united in marriage to Donald Leroy McCarty in Independence, MO. He preceded her in death on September 2, 2020. JoAnn retired from Lake City Army Ammunitions after 30 plus years of service. She was a member of St. George Catholic Church and the Altar Society. JoAnn spent many hours volunteering for the Odessa Clothes Closet, Odessa Senior Center, Odessa Food Pantry, and Powell Gardens. In addition to spending time with family and friends, JoAnn enjoyed reading, crocheting, gardening, and puzzles. 

JoAnn is survived by four children, Robert Lee “Bob” Onka, Jr. of Bates City, MO, Deborah JoAnn Thompson and husband Greg of Bates City, MO, William Charles “Bill” Onka of Independence, MO, and Diana Reicher and husband Barry of Ozark, MO; three step children, Steve McCarty and wife Kathy of Buffalo, MO, Patricia Serrato and husband John of Independence, MO, and Pamela Goff and husband Jim of Oak Grove, MO; a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. 

 In addition to her parents and husband, JoAnn was preceded in death by a son, David Martin Onka; a stepson, Dennis McCarty; a sister, Barbara Hunsucker; and two brothers, William “Bob” Martin and John Martin.
