Joan Alice Wrightson Gann (86) left this earthly life on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at the Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, MO surrounded in love by her family and nursing and hospice staff. Joan, having faced many trials and hardships, fought the final battles of cancer and dementia with true valor and spirit. She was born on August 11, 1929 in Liverpool, England to Alfred and Florence (née Clark) Wrightson. She was the youngest of six children. As a pre-caution during World War II, she was evacuated to Wales for several years during her childhood.
She married Frederick Surbaugh on October 8, 1947, as he was stationed with the US Army, in England at that time. They then moved to Ray County, Missouri, where Frederick had been born and raised. Together, they had a son, Michael Frederick. Joan, with Michael, lived in St. Joseph, MO, for the majority of her time in the US where she worked for a variety of businesses, including H.D. Lee, Frederick Boulevard Baptist Daycare and Wyatt Park Baptist Church. Joan married Edward Elmo Earixson in 1951. Together they had a daughter, Kimberly Ann. In 1963 she married Walter Leroy Gann. Together they had a daughter, Allyson Marie.
In her later years, Joan moved to Branson and worked at several motels in the tourist area. She then relocated to Lexington and thoroughly enjoyed living at the Aull Lane Apartment complex with such dear friends.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lexington.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Walter Leroy Gann, and son, Michael Frederick Wrightson.
She is survived by daughters, Kim Earixson Senne of Branson, MO and Allyson Gann Crosson (Tim) of Lexington, MO and daughter-in-law, Elena Scott Wrightson of Chico, CA. Nanny’s eight grandchildren include Valerie Lynn Waller (Matt) of Fayetteville, AR, Matthew James Senne of Branson, MO, Amelia Mia and Selena Joan Wrightson and Anna Rainey Scott, all of Chico, CA and Samuel James Absher, Caleb Michael Clark and Sarah Elizabeth Caldwell Crosson all of Lexington, MO. Her three great-grandchildren include Ella and Finn Waller of Fayetteville, AR and Anthony James Senne of Walla Walla, WA.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the Walker Nadler Fuller Funeral Home, 1720 S. St., Lexington, MO, 64067, 660-259-2245. A visitation will be held one hour prior from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials may be made in Joan’s memory to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
