Joan (Alumbaugh) Dyer, 83 of Higginsville, Missouri passed away on Sunday April 30, 2017 at the Meyer Care Center in Higginsville, MO.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, May 4, 2017 at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, 306 S. 2nd St., Odessa, MO, 64076. Visitation will be held one hour prior from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church. Joan was born on November 14, 1933 in Odessa, MO to Homer Bryan and Irene (Bishop) Alumbaugh. She graduated in 1951 from Odessa High School in Odessa, MO. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO. Joan was an English Teacher. She taught for Wellington-Napoleon School District, Higginsville School District and retired from the Okeechobee Florida School District after 20 plus years. Joan was a Florida Teacher of The Year in 1987 and she was awarded the “Walt Disney” Teacher of the Year in 1992. After retirement from teaching, Joan took a position as the Editor for the Okeechobee Newspaper in Florida until she decided to move back to Higginsville in 2012. In addition to spending time with her family and friends, Joan enjoyed writing poetry, gardening and making crafts.
Survivors include two children, Joseph Dyer of Higginsville, MO and Faye Lynn Dyer of Higginsville, MO; two grandchildren, Thomas Mangnall and wife Laura of Kansas City, MO and Jessie Mangnall and fiancé Lorne Meinershagen of Oak Grove, MO; two great grandchildren, Owen and Cameron; two brothers, F.W. “Shorty” Alumbaugh and wife Bonnie of Odessa, MO and Ed Alumbaugh and wife Martha of Odessa, MO; a sister, Jean Bishop of Odessa, MO and many nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents.
