James was born on February 1, 1928 in Chilhowee, MO to Harold Franklin and Bonnie Francis (Lingle) Robbins. He graduated from Wellington High School. On November 4, 1950 he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War. James was honorably discharged on November 14, 1952. After serving his country, he attended the University of Missouri, Columbia where he earned his Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering. In June of 1977 he graduated from California State University, Sacramento with a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering. James started his engineering career with McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corp. in 1957 and retired from Aerojet Corp. in March of 1993. James was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, The National and California Societies of Professional Engineers, the Structural Engineers Association of Central California (SEAOCC) and the Seismology Committee. He was a member of the Greenton Baptist Church in Odessa, MO.
Although James was an engineer, he still had a strong love for farming. After retiring, he purchased a property that had two lots on it. One contained a small house with a detached garage and the other was undeveloped ground. James gutted the house, raised the garage and rebuilt both. On the undeveloped ground he created, along with his daughter Mary and his sisters Betty and Mary Jane a beautiful garden. Family and friends were often entertained there and the garden provided not only wonderful food, but was a pleasure to sit by.
James is survived by his three daughters, Robin Leavesley of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, Mary Robbins of Sacramento, CA, and Janette Divine of Rocklin, CA; a granddaughter, Jessica Divine of Rocklin, CA; three sisters, Betty Jean Ring of West Sacramento, CA, Mary Jane Ellis and husband Leo of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Minnie Belle Schmidt of Odessa, MO; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a sister, Wyota Francis Kite.
