Not all superheroes wear capes, sometimes they come in the form of a generous and kind son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather like Jack Carroll. Jack, age 87, passed away surrounded by family on January 8, 2025.
Jack was born in Bosworth MO on June 6, 1937, to Francis and Lloyd Carroll. He lived in many places during his youth, including Kansas City, Pittsburgh PA, and of course Lexington where he graduated from high school before enlisting in the Marine Corp where he toured most of Asia and a few places in between.
Once asked how he got through his years as a Marine without a single tattoo, he explained that most of his checks went back to support his family, a practice that began out of necessity during his high school years. He never had the money for a tattoo, which he was grateful for later in life, but that was Jack, always willing to help and find the silver lining in every cloud.
After honorably discharging from the Marines, he moved back to Lexington and married Marietta Atwood to whom he was married for 51 years before her passing in 2011. They had two daughters, Regina and Rebecca. Jack began working at the MFA Grain Elevator in 1960 and continued there until his retirement in 2002.
Fishing and gardening were two of his biggest passions followed by a cold beer and a Willie Nelson tune. He was a devoted family man and revered by his children. They have many fond memories of his gentle and supportive nature, but he was not a pushover. When he had something to say, they knew to listen and learn – he was an excellent teacher of life.
Jack’s parents, Francis and Lloyd, wife, Marietta, and siblings, Belle, Glen, Michael, and Janet preceded him death. He will be dearly missed by his family - daughters, Regina and her husband Greg, Rebecca and her husband Clay, his sister Marilyn and her husband Mark, his grandchildren, Jenni, Jamie, and Jack, his great-grandchildren, Cy, Cruz, Hazel, and Harlow, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, his family asks that you find a way to carry on his benevolent superpowers and perform a random act of kindness in his memory.
