Herschel Irvin Butler, 87, of Sibley, Missouri passed away on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, MO.
A visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, 306 S. 2nd Street, Odessa, MO, 64076, 816-633-5524. A funeral service will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow at Greenton Cemetery in Odessa, MO. Herschel was born on July 1, 1934, to Willie and Lillian (Hamlyn) Butler in Gray Ridge, MO. On June 4, 1960, he was united in marriage to Shirley (Chiles) in Lilbourn, MO. Together they raised their two daughters in Odessa, MO. He served in the United States Navy until being honorably discharged. Herschel retired from General Motors in April 1988 after working for 24 years. He then worked for the Odessa School District where he retired in 2013. Herschel had a long and full life. In his youth, he loved fishing, collecting coins, gardening, mushroom hunting, and spending time with his family. In his later years, Herschel enjoyed watching old westerns, studying the Bible, cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs, sharing a good meal with family, and sipping a good cup of coffee while sitting on his deck. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be dearly missed.
Herschel is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Butler; his daughters, Mary Anne Holmberg and husband, Jassen Holmberg, Cynthia Diane Stock and fiancé Keith Gines; seven grandchildren, Heather Cruz and husband, David Cruz, Jacob Alexander Stock and wife, Emily Stock, Corey Harwood and wife, Meredith Harwood, Joshua Irvin Stock and wife, Molly Stock, Randy Harwood and wife, Samantha Harwood, Derrick Holmberg, and Alec Holmberg and wife, Ashley Holmberg; eight great grandchildren, Alexis Cruz, Jackson Stock, Trenton Stock, Bennett Stock, Lane Harwood, Taya Harwood, Austynn Stock, and Melanie Stock; he is also survived by three brothers, Chester, Billie, and Dub Butler; and many nieces and nephews.
Herschel was preceded in death by his father, Willie E. Butler; his mother, Lillian Butler; his sisters, Florence Taylor, Dorothy DiGiralmo, Wanda Clutter-Sims, and Doris Ellis; and his brother, C.H. Butler.
