Helen Lenore (Reed) Hilliard, 95, of Odessa, Missouri passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2014.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday, August 25, 2014 at the First Christian Church of Odessa, 224 W. Dryden St., Odessa, MO 64076. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday, August 25, 2014 at the church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Independence, MO. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church, 224 W. Dryden St., Odessa, MO 64076. Helen was born on May 21, 1919 in Odessa, MO to Opie and Grace (Filler) Reed. She was a 1937 graduate of Odessa High School and also the Salutatorian of her senior class. After high school she attended the College of Commerce in Kansas City, MO. Helen worked for Farmers Insurance Group for over 40 years on the Country Club Plaza as a Legal Secretary. On July 18, 1941 she was united in marriage to James “Jim†Hopkins Hilliard in Odessa, MO. Jim preceded her in death on January 5, 1992. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Odessa, a 50 year member of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Christian Women’s Fellowship. Helen loved traveling; she was an avid sports fan and played bridge.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary H. Emmert and husband Steve of Grain Valley, MO and Betty Hughes and husband Doug of Lee’s Summit, MO; a sister, Emma Lee Menssen of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; and a sister in law, Ida (Reed) Anderson.
In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by a brother, David Reed and a step mother, Erma (Brown ) Reed.
