Floyd George Whiteman, 89, Lee’s Summit, Mo., died January 5, 2015 at Village Hospice in Lee’s Summit.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the Colbern Road Community of Christ, 27507 E. Colbern Rd., Lee’s Summit, MO 64063. Visitation will be held one hour prior from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Greenton Cemetery north of Odessa, MO. Floyd was born Sept. 24, 1925, in Warrensburg, Mo., the son of A.F. and Hattie Whiteman. He is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Vicki Lee; his parents; a brother Charles R. Whiteman, two sisters, Florene Whiteman Collins and Beatrice R. Whiteman.
Floyd served in the U.S. Navy, Seaman 1st Class and was a veteran of World War II. He served aboard a patrol craft sweeper (U.S.S. PCS 1455) in the South Pacific and fought in battles in Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, where he was wounded and was awarded a Purple Heart.
He returned stateside in 1946 to Warrensburg, Mo., and resumed his education and farming. In 1958, he married Catharine Schenck and two years later moved to Odessa, Mo., where they lived until 2001 when they moved to Lee’s Summit.
Floyd was employed by General Motors for 28 years. He and his wife, Cathy, farmed and raised livestock from 1960 to 2001 at their farm in Odessa, an operation that was well known for breeding Quarter Horses. The Whitemans won numerous ribbons and awards and Floyd served a long term as president of the Odessa Saddle Club. After Floyd retired, he enjoyed a number of hobbies of which original woodworking was his favorite. He was known for his signature hand-crafted doll beds.
Floyd was gifted with a wonderful wit and social personality that earned him many friends. To his family, he was truly a source of strength, support, inspiration and determination.
He was a member of the Community of Christ Church for 34 years. He served faithfully as pastor of the Bates City congregation for five years and an Elder at the Colbern Road congregation, where he was a member for the past six years.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy, of the home; and his son, Trampas Whiteman, daughter-in-law Cindy and two grandsons, Travis and Andy Whiteman of Lee’s Summit. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. E.W. Whiteman (wife Edna), of Liberty, Mo., and 12 nieces and nephews.
