Doris Lee Johns, 84, of Bates City, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at home in Bates City, MO surrounded by family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday August 8, 2016 at the First Christian Church, 224 W. Dryden St., Odessa, MO, 64076 with Dr. David Corder officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday August 7, 2016 at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, 306 S. 2nd St., Odessa, MO, 64076, 816-633-5524. Burial will be in the Higginsville City Cemetery in Higginsville, MO. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Homes for Our Troops, 6 Main St., Taunton, MA 02780 or the Odessa First Christian Church. Doris was born on May 3, 1932, in Paige City, Mo. to John and Carrie (Meade) Fortner. She attended country schools at Prairie and Plum Grove, in the Lexington and Higginsville area. She graduated from Higginsville High School in 1949. She was employed at International Brown Shoe Company in Higginsville and later at Southwestern Bell in Kansas City as a telephone operator before staying at home to raise her family. On October 4, 1953 she married Billy Joe Johns at the First Baptist parsonage in Higginsville, Mo. They lived in Kansas City and then moved to Bates City and later purchased a farm living there for 62 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Odessa and served as an Elder Emeritus and President of the CWF, she was the Concord 4-H assistant leader and foods leader for 14 years. She loved working in her garden and spending time with her family.
Doris is survived by four children: Teresa Johns of Liberty, Mo., Jerry Johns and wife, Mindy, of Blue Springs, Mo., Steve Johns and wife, Ruth, of Bates City, Mo., Cindy Guptill and husband, Rick, of Gladstone, Mo. ; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a sister, Alice Gudde.
