Alice Hoover age 98 passed away July 9, 2013, at Cumberland Hills Assisted Living in Aiken, South Carolina. She was born August 15, 1914, south of Odessa, Missouri, in Johnson County, daughter of James C DeLay and Bertie L Pallette DeLay. On December 21, 1940, she was married to Marvin Vernon Hoover. He preceded her in death March 17, 1985. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday September 21, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church of Odessa with Reverend Herman Hudson, Jr. and Reverend Sam Fisher officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday September 20, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, 306 S. Second Street, Odessa, MO, 64076, 816-633-5524. It is suggested that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The First United Methodist Church of Odessa Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Odessa R-VII Public Foundation to be used for a scholarship. Memorials may be entrusted to the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home. Condolences for the family may be left at www.ralphojones.com. She lived in the Odessa Community until she moved to Aiken, South Carolina so she would be near her daughter and family on October 5, 2007. Mrs. Hoover attended elementary school at Highland rural school, in Johnson County and graduated from Odessa High School in 1932. She graduated from Central Missouri Teachers College (UCM), Warrensburg, Missouri, in the summer of 1939. Later she received certification in Guidance and Library Science. In the Spring of 1976 she retired after thirty-four years of teaching. Twenty-seven of those years were in the Odessa R-VII School District. She also taught three years at McCoy in Johnson County and two years each at Wheatley and Starr in Lafayette County. She was inducted into the Odessa R-VII Public Foundation Hall Of Fame, in Honor and recognition of Her Commitment to Education March, 2005. She had been a member of The First United Methodist Church in Odessa, Missouri, since 1929, serving the Lord in many areas of church work. She was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association and member of The Order of Eastern Star fifty-five years. She was Mother Advisor of Rainbow for Girls for eleven years and also served as Past Chief of the Pythian Sisters. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Priscilla and Jim Hammett, of Aiken, South Carolina and a brother and sister-in-law, Orville S and Martha DeLay, Holton, Kansas. She is also survived by two grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, Brian Joseph (Nuri Argiles) and James Marvin Hammett. She is also survived by two great-granddaughters, Rowan Maika and Ella Jane Hammett, two step-great-grandsons, Fernando Antonio and Daniel Rodriguez, and an adopted-by-heart great-granddaughter, Allison Steelman Ziegler, and two nephews, Andy(Sherry) and Ray(Rhonda) DeLay, four great-nieces, one great-nephew and other relatives and friends. Her parents, a sister Nellie Irene Campbell, two nieces, a nephew and an adopted-by-heart great-grandson, Cole Steelman preceded her in death. Honorary pallbearers are Ronnie Steelman, Ray Fizer, Bill Dahlor, Jim Neal, Sam Raber, Arthur Jr. Steelman, and Randy Arnold.
